Five-star guard Anfernee Simons sets somewhat surprising first official visit

Is this for real?

With the college basketball season heating up, the recruiting trail still remains an important part to any one coach's job. On the flip side, for recruits, it is a nice time of the year to start visiting campus. That's exactly what Anfernee Simmons is doing, as he's scheduled an important trip.

A five-star prospect out of the 2018 recruiting class, the guard has a visit set with the Tennessee Volunteers on Jan. 6. That's an important day in the SEC docket, as the Vols are scheduled to face the Kentucky Wildcats — and you just know John Calipari is eyeing the kid, too.

At the time of this writing, no other visits are scheduled. However, Florida, UCLA, South Carolina and North Carolina State are among the others most involved in the prospect's recruiting process.

As for if Rick Barnes has a realistic chance to land such a lauded recruit, Simons told Rivals the following:

"It is just a good program and coming up," he said. "Rick Barnes has coached a lot of good guards and gotten them to the league. He said that I could come up and make the program go higher."

There's still a chance Simons decides to go pro, for what it is worth. Either way, he's not expected to make a decision for a few more months. The 6-foot-3, 165-pound combo guard is ranked as the No. 1 player at that particular position and is the No. 9 recruit in the nation overall according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
