According to ESPN, no kicker has been taken above the fourth round in the NFL Draft since 2005. Heck, no NFL team even took a kicker in the 2015 draft, even with 250-plus picks at their disposal.
Well, Florida State kicker Roberto Aguayo looks to be bucking that trend, as star special teams player could potentially go as high as the second round.
Florida State had their Pro Day on Tuesday, and Aguayo apparently impressed the scouts and coaches once again. ESPN states that the scouts believe Aguayo is a sure-fire third-round pick, but that he could go even higher based off of the NFL's new PAT and kickoff rules.
Aguayo isn't your normal kicker, so he definitely warrants this type of consideration from the NFL. Even though kickers and punters are often maligned in football, there is definitely a lot of value in having a good one, and Aguayo will likely be an upgrade at that position for most teams.
Aguayo is entering the NFL after declaring for the NFL Draft after just his junior season. Aguayo was 69-for-78 on field goals in college, and he made all 198 of his extra-point attempts. If he does indeed go in the second, he will be the highest kicker taken in the Draft since Sebastian Janikowski — also of Florida State — was selected with the No. 17 overall pick in 2000.
