This will be a reason that some people are happy the old BCS rankings are gone.

The Sagarin ratings — once part of the BCS computer polls — have released their preseason rankings, and one team in the Top 5 may stick out a bit over the others.

1. Alabama
2. Ohio State
3. Florida State
4. Oklahoma
5. Auburn

That’s right, Auburn ranks up there in the preseason Top 5 with the likes of Alabama and Ohio State. This puts Auburn ahead of reigning national champion Clemson (No. 6), and reigning conference champions Washington (No. 7) and Penn State (No. 10). Preseason hot shot USC — who is No. 4 in both the AP and Coaches Polls — is all the way down at No. 12 in the ratings.

Auburn fans should have a lot to be excited about with incoming quarterback Jarrett Stidham taking over the starting role with running backs Kamryn Pettway and Kerryon Johnson behind him. They will be really good this year, but putting them at five already will have a lot of fans scratching their heads after an 8-5 season last year.

Of course, Washington went 7-6 in 2015 and went on to the Playoff in 2016 after some hype in last year’s preseason, so maybe Sagarin is spot on here.
