One of the Big 12's best defensive players slated to miss at least the first month of the season

Isn't it way too early for a setback.

West Virginia has already suffered a setback before the 2017-18 season even really begins.

Linebacker David Long is slated to miss "at least" the first month of the season due to a meniscus injury, per Bruce Feldman of Sports Illustrated. He's just one of three returning starters for the Mountaineers.

Long was reportedly injured during offseason conditioning. He started 10 games and had 65 tackles last season, including 11 in a standout performance against Miami in the Russell Athletic Bowl.

West Virginia opens the season against Virginia Tech. They'll then play East Carolina, Delaware State and Kansas ahead of a bye week in September,
