1. Alabama — SEC, 5-0
LW: 2 — Result: W, 34-6 vs. Kentucky
Alabama reclaims the top spot in the rankings thanks to the Louisville loss to Clemson. The Tide took care of business vs. Kentucky, but things will get infinitely more interesting next week when Arkansas comes to town.
2. Clemson — ACC, 5-0
LW: 5 — Result: W, 42-36 vs. Louisville
After two games of looking like a mediocre team, Clemson has finally turned on the jets. Their win last week over Georgia Tech was impressive, but taking down Louisville like they did was downright insane. A lot of people were wondering when "last year's" Deshaun Watson would show up... well, it looks like we found him.
3. Ohio State — Big Ten, 4-0
LW: 3 — Result: W, 58-0 vs. Rutgers
I get that Rutgers isn't the normal conference opponent that you would hang your hat on after a victory, but this was impressive. J.T. Barrett looks great again, as he is now the school's all-time leader in passing touchdowns. The defense we all worried about after they lost all that talent to the NFL? Just fine.
4. Houston — AAC, 5-0
LW: 4 — Result: W, 42-14 vs. UConn
Another big win vs. a conference opponent, which is what Houston needs to do in order to keep its spot in the Top 5. Greg Ward Jr. had one of the most impressive passing nights of his career against UConn, going 32-for-38 for 389 yards and three touchdowns. The Cougars have a game at Navy next on the schedule, which provides a decent mid-season test for them.
5. Michigan — Big Ten, 5-0
LW: 6 — Result: W, 14-7 vs. Wisconsin
I wouldn't exactly call it a signature win, but Michigan did what it needed to do vs. Wisconsin to escape as the victor in that Top 10 matchup. The win did expose Michigan's offense a little bit, but it really doesn't matter; with a defense this good, Michigan should be fine all season as long as they avoid turnovers.
6. Louisville — ACC, 4-1
LW: 1 — Result: L, 36-42 vs. Clemson
They don't fall too far after the loss to Clemson, as that game was probably the best one of the year. The Cardinals fell four yards short of victory, but the good news is this: they can still run the table with the rest of their schedule, which still might be good enough for a Playoff spot.
And anyone who still doesn't have Lamar Jackson at the top of their Heisman list after that game needs to heavily re-think that decision.
7. Washington — Pac-12, 5-0
LW: 10 — Result: W, 44-6 vs. Stanford
I had been somewhat lower than most people have on Washington... until now. They demolished Stanford on Friday night, and while that might be because Stanford isn't as good as we think, it really doesn't matter; beating a team with a Heisman candidate like Christian McCaffrey by almost 40 points is ridiculous.
8. Texas A&M — SEC, 5-0
LW: 8 — Result: W, 24-13 vs. South Carolina
They struggled a bit at South Carolina, but here's the important thing: they got away with the victory, and didn't fall into the trap game before they have a huge game hosting Tennessee next week.
9. Tennessee — SEC, 5-0
LW: 11 — Result: W, 34-31 vs. Georgia
Speaking of Tennessee... Is this just going to be their gimmick now? The Vols have been in trouble in four of their five games this year, but it hasn't mattered at all. A prayer of Hail Mary from Josh Dobbs to Jauan Jenning saved Tennessee this time, and for now, all the luck seems to go to Tennessee during second halves of games.
And once they start to get players back on their heavily injured defense? Oh boy...
10. Miami — ACC, 4-0
LW: 18 — Result: W, 35-21 vs. Georgia Tech
This was a big win for Miami. They had played three scrubs to open the season, but they really showed that they are a competitor with a big win over Georgia Tech. The defense was swarming for the Hurricanes, as back-to-back defense touchdowns helped them score 21 points in a two minute span during the second quarter. That two-minute stretch essentially iced the game, as Tech wasn't able to recover.
11. Wisconsin — Big Ten, 4-1
LW: 9 — Result: L, 7-14 vs. Michigan
Wisconsin won't have long to rebound from this loss. They get a week off, but that might not be enough to prepare for a visiting Ohio State team. The Badgers didn't get away with scoring seven points against Michigan, so you know that isn't going to work against Ohio State, either.
12. Nebraska — Big Ten, 5-0
LW: 13 — Result: W, 31-16 vs. Illinois
It wasn't pretty, but Nebraska got the win over Illinois to remain undefeated. They play at Indiana next week, and they won't be able to go into the fourth quarter of that game trailing; Indiana showed they are a good team with their win over Michigan State this Saturday.
14. Baylor — Big 12, 5-0
LW: 13 — Result: W, 45-42 vs. Iowa St.
The Big 12 may not want Baylor to be the team that is carrying the banner for the, but it is a better alternative than not having a banner to carry at all. Baylor escaped from Ames thanks to a last second drive and chip shot field goal, and the Bears remain the Big 12's best hope at getting into the College Football Playoff.
14. Ole Miss — SEC, 3-2
LW: 16 — Result: W, 48-28 vs. Memphis
This game did have some significance, as Memphis took down Ole Miss last year. Ole Miss got their payback, though, and the Rebels will now have a week off before their next big game in Fayetteville against Arkansas.
15. Western Michigan — MAC, 5-0
LW: 19 — Result:W, 49-10 vs. Central Michigan
I will continue to ride the Western Michigan train... er... boat I guess. Remember the Central Michigan team that beat Oklahoma State earlier this year? Well Western Michigan just clobbered them on Saturday, so they now have that win to go with their two wins against the Big Ten this year.
The Broncos are for real.
16. Arkansas — SEC, 4-1
LW: 22 — Result: W, 52-10 vs. Alcorn St.
After a loss to Texas A&M last week, they get back on track with an easy win over an FCS opponent. They will need all the rest they got this game, as they've got Alabama next week.
17. North Dakota State — MVC, 4-0
LW: 17 — Result: W, 31-10 vs. Illinois St.
The Bison got a decent enough victory over Illinois State for their homecoming, but I will be real here: NDSU is only keeping their spot because multiple teams ahead of them lost. Illinois State is a decent FCS team, but as I said last week, the Bison will need to be blowing out their FCS competition to keep their spot in the Top 25.
18. Stanford — Pac-12, 3-1
LW: 7 — Result: L, 44-6 vs. Washington
I considered leaving Stanford out altogether, but I felt that might be too harsh. They looked BAD against Washington, and it really makes you reflect on the unimpressive wins earlier in the year over Kansas State and UCLA. They have a lot to prove at home against Washington State next week.
19. North Carolina — ACC, 4-1
LW: 24 — Result: W, 37-35 vs. FSU
The Tar Heels ended the nation's longest home winning streak by taking down Florida State in what was an epic game. Quarterback Mitch Trubisky continues to improve, as a 31-for-38 passing out with over 400 yards is easily the best game of his career.
How did this team lose to Georgia, again?
20. Oklahoma — Big 12, 2-2
LW: NR — Result: W, 52-46 vs. TCU
Oklahoma almost blew this, as TCU came back from a 20-point deficit to make this game close. Thankfully for the Sooners, though, they get the win and avoid what would have been an absolute disastrous 1-3 start to the season.
21. Florida — SEC, 4-1
LW: 23 — Result: W, 13-6 vs. Vandy
I get that a game at Vandy might be uninspiring, but it was mostly Florida fans there anyways, so... you got to do better than this, Gators. They should get quarterback Luke Del Rio back next week, which should solve a lot of Florida's offensive woes.
22. Boise State — MW, 4-0
LW: NR — Result: W, 21-10 vs. USU
Another year, another "Oh, Boise State is 4-0" start. I wouldn't consider their win over Utah State impressive, but they got the job done.
23. West Virginia — Big 12, 4-0
LW: NR — Result:W, 17-16 vs. Kansas St.
The only remaining Big 12 undefeateds are Baylor and... West Virginia? Yes, the Mountaineers stayed undefeated this week with a narrow victory over Kansas State. Luckily for West Virginia, they don't face Oklahoma and Baylor until the end of the season, so they could conceivably get off to an 8-0 start.
24. Auburn — SEC, 3-2
LW: NR — Result: W, 58-7 vs. ULM
Auburn might not be a Top 25 team to a lot of people, but hindsight is key here. They lost two close games to Clemson and Texas A&M; like Oklahoma and Ole Miss ahead of them, they can't be penalized too much for that.
25. Air Force — MW, 4-0
LW: NR — Result: W, 28-14 vs. Navy
We had a battle of undefeated service academies on Saturday, and Air Force came away with a big win over Navy. Air Force has a chance to run the table now, as their schedule is pretty clear until they encounter Boise State at the end of the regular season.
