Tom Herman pushes back against the idea one QB has won Texas’ starting gig: “No way”

Not so fast.

Texas quarterback Shane Buechele earned the starting job as a true freshman a season ago, and he performed very well in the Longhorns' spring game last Saturday.

However, Texas coach Tom Herman said Buechele hasn't secured the starting QB position despite throwing for 369 yards and scoring three touchdowns during the last scrimmage.

"And as far as Shane being the starter, no way," Herman said via the Dallas Morning News. "I think a healthy fear of losing your job is just that—healthy. Shane knows we have a lot of confidence in him, and Shane did a lot of things really, really well this spring.

"But to say that he's won the job in 12 padded practices when he doesn't even get hit, that would be premature."

Buechele is in competition with incoming freshman Sam Ehlinger, who was a four-star recruit out of high school. And Herman is considering adding another QB—potentially former Louisville QB Kyle Bolin—as a grad transfer.

Texas offensive coordinator Tim Beck said Buechele is in the "process" of doing what he needs to do to secure the job, but he and Herman acknowledged the competition will continue into the fall.

Buechele threw for just under 3,000 yards, 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions as a true freshman in 2016.
