Ohio State fans are in mourning today following the death of a legend

Kirk Herbstreit says he's overwhelmed by the support.

We've got some terrible news out Cleveland, Ohio. Jim Herbstreit, father of Kirk and Ohio State legend himself passed away on Thursday. According to Kirk, his father "died suddenly" yesterday morning, but had been suffering from Alzheimer's the past few years.

The younger Herbstreit both confirmed that initial report and thanked everyone for their well wishes.

Jim Herbstreit was a three-year letter-winner from 1958 to 1960 who played running back, defensive back and was a key special-teamer for Ohio State. He became an assistant on the Buckeyes staff after graduating before becoming the top college assistant at the University of Miami under Bo Schembechler in 1963. Jim Herbstreit left coaching two years later.
