When we last heard from Bill Cubit, the former Illinois head coach was getting run out of town after an athletic director change early in 2016. However, the long-time football man is reportedly back on a sideline in a full-time capacity, even if it is not quite at the same level.
In fact, Cubit is reportedly taking a gig as a high school coach at Martin County High School in Florida.
Per Saturday Tradition, Cubit actually coached at the same high school nearly 30 years ago and that makes this an interesting “homecoming” story. With that said, it is obviously a far cry from running the show at a Big Ten program and, even if Cubit’s tenure in Champagne lasted only one year, it takes an interesting and dedicated individual to go from that life to heading up a high school program.
The same report indicates that Cubit could have landed a coordinator-type role at the Division I level but, instead, he chose this route. It will be interesting to see if he ever makes his way back to the FBS ranks but, even if not, Cubit probably never receive a fair shake in the aftermath of Tim Beckman’s ouster at Illinois.
