Georgia swipes away assistant coach from Big Ten school

Big move by the Bulldogs.

Kirby Smart's debut season as the head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs did not go as swimmingly as some projected. Things were not horrible in Athens, as the team finished with an 8-5 after a bowl victory over the TCU Horned Frogs, but expectations remain sky high for the program after the ousting of Mark Richt and Smart has a tall task ahead of him.

While assistant coaches do not often move the needle in immense fashion, Smart reportedly made a very interesting move to bolster Georgia's staff this week. Jake Rowe of Dawgs247 brings word that the Bulldogs will now employ a new member on their strength and conditioning staff, as Smart has lured former Wisconsin strength and conditioning assistant Jamil Walker to Athens.

This is absolutely a supporting piece but, given the way that Wisconsin develops and maintains one of the best strength and conditioning programs in the country, it is noteworthy. One of the knocks at Georgia in recent years has been the inability to translate monster recruiting classes into on-field success and, with an uptick in terms of player development in this fashion, every little bit helps.

A move like this won't swing the pendulum of the SEC East on its own but Kirby Smart appears to be leaving no stone unturned in his quest to bolster the profile of the Georgia Bulldogs.
