Michigan's 2016 roster is out and there are some surprises

Michigan's football roster officially exists for 2016. Take note.

Jim Harbaugh is notoriously cagey with regard to releasing any information about the football roster for the Michigan Wolverines. However, Harbaugh has no choice but to reveal a roster listing in advance of training camp, and he did so on Sunday morning.

While much of the roster was revealed without fanfare, there were some interesting and notable changes that could affect Michigan on the field in 2016. Here is a snapshot:

  • Former four-star quarterback Zach Gentry is officially a tight end. The converted signal-caller was playing tight end during both bowl practice and in the spring, and now, Gentry is listed as wearing number 83 with his notable 6-foot-7 frame.
  • There are several Michigan players with changes in weight, and they are headlined by Taco Charlton. Perhaps Michigan's most notable pass-rusher, Charlton has slimmed down from 285 pounds to 272 pounds, and he will be asked to get after the quarterback on a regular basis. Elsewhere, true freshman (and potential starting linebacker) Devin Bush Jr. has gained 12 pounds up to 232 since Spring Practice and three rotation members of the offensive line (Ben Braden, Grant Newsome and David Dawson) gained at least 10 pounds.
  • Lastly, wide receiver (and sometimes two-way player) Freddy Canteen highlights a small list of players who were not listed on the roster. He is joined by junior defensive lineman Brady Pallante, who is nowhere to be found.

The Wolverines will begin practice on Monday, and with Harbaugh's "bunker" mentality, this could be the broadest update that the public receives for a while. Soak it in.
