I have to admit I laughed writing this headline. Yes, it appears that former Florida head coach and current Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp is a real candidate to replace Steve Spurrier at South Carolina. Earlier on Monday it was reported that what looked to be Carolina’s top candidate — Houston head coach Tom Herman — was on the list no longer and would be signing a contract with Houston to retain him until at least 2016. According to both Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports and JC Shrubertt of 247Sports, Muschamp is getting some serious consideration.

The report, if true, is a little bit surprising, given that Muschamp had a 26-21 record as Florida’s head coach from 2011-14. And his first year as Auburn’s defensive coordinator has been less than ideal — the Tigers’ defensive struggles have continued even with Muschamp at the helm. Although some might consider Muschamp a bad choice, South Carolina may be dealing with limited options, given the current coaching carousel of 14 current head coaching openings including Missouri, Georgia, Miami and Memphis to name a few.
