Mississippi State earned its biggest win of the season, stomping out any hopes of a College Football Playoff berth for the Texas A&M Aggies.

Previously ranked No. 4 in the first College Football Playoff, No. 5 Washington now has the inside track to the final spot assuming they stay unbeaten the rest of the way.

With the loss, A&M now has two in-conference losses, meaning there’s no shot at an SEC Championship game berth unless disaster strikes Alabama, Auburn and LSU over the next handful of weeks. If Auburn or LSU can snag a win over the Tide, either school would then have the open path to the SEC title game and a possible spot in the College Football Playoffs.

Teams like No. 6 Ohio State, No. 7 Louisville and No. 8 Wisconsin now could find themselves moving up the charts and vying for the final spot as well if the College Football Playoff committee continues to value quality wins over win-loss records.

The Bulldogs put together a 14-0 lead before Texas A&m could put anything together. After Trevor Knight injured his shoulder on a dive into the end zone for the Aggies’ first touchdown, Texas A&M watched Mississippi State put up another 14 unanswered points to go up 28-7.

With less than a minute remaining in the fourth, A&M got the ball back down seven, but a late interception sealed it.

It’s the Bulldogs’ biggest victory of the season after dreadful losses to South Alabama and BYU this season.
