Tom Herman officially comments on Houston's failed bid into the Big 12

Herman and Houston defeated Louisville on Thursday night.

Tom Herman and Houston may be flying high after a big 36-10 upset over No. 5 Louisville on Thursday.

However, things haven't been all great for Houston this year. The Cougars have lost twice since they were ranked No. 5 earlier in the season, and even bigger, they had their expansion bid into the Big 12 denied when the conference decided against adding teams.

After several weeks, Herman finally commented on Houston's failure to get into the Big 12 on the Dan Patrick Show, expressing some disappointment at the Big 12's decision.

"Did I think so? Yeah, I did, to be quite honest with you," Herman said when asked if he thought Houston was going to be the Big 12's newest member. "I didn't concern myself at all with things that I can't control, but when you sit back and you've got a spare few seconds you think about the opportunities for the Big 12. We're the best candidate for conference expansion in the entire country. Regardless of it's the Big 12. We're a tier one academic institution, we're in the fourth-largest market in the country and we're playing really good football right now and making unbelievable upgrades to our facilities and our program.

Herman is right to still feel strong about Houston's equity as a program. Few Group of 5 teams can match what Houston could bring to a Power 5 conference, and eventually expansion is likely to get the Cougars taken by somebody.

Will Herman still be the coach of Houston when that happens? That remains to be seen, but we do know that Herman is due a $5 million bonus if the school gets accepted into the Big 12 during his tenure.
