Before he was a possible presidential candidate, big-screen actor and WWE WrestleMania headliner, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was just 24-year-old Rocky Maivia breaking into professional wrestling.

Twenty years ago, Maivia made his in-ring debut at WWE’s Survivor Series. With a chia pet on his head, streamers falling from his shirt and a bubbly personality, Maivia became the sole survivor of his team, outlasting Crush, Goldust, Triple H and Jerry Lawler.

He quickly transitioned to, “The Rock,” as fans turned on the bright-eyed kid and allowed him to develop an edgier side. What came next was one of the most charismatic personalities in WWE history, combining quick wit and electrifying moves to become unquestionably one of the top stars in the organization’s history.
