The MLB world mourns as one of its top young players has been killed in a boating accident

Awful news.

Major League Baseball received horrible news on Sunday, as it has been reported that young Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez was killed in a boating accident. He was 24.

Sunday's Marlins game against the Atlanta Braves has been cancelled as a result.

"The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez," the Marlins said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time."

Fernandez was a two-time All-Star, and he was already one of the best pitchers in the game despite his youth. In nearly 500 career innings, Fernandez had a 2.58 career ERA thanks to a great fastball and curveball. After recovering from Tommy John surgery in 2014, Fernandez had returned full-time to the mound this year, was he was in the middle of another fantastic season.

Our thoughts and prayers go to his family and friends as they deal with this horrific tragedy.
