As we have previously written, athletes across sports have recently donned “I Can’t Breathe” T-shirts to show their support for Eric Garner, who was killed by police in New York City using a choke hold.  Garner’s death has been one more incident spawning anti-police brutality protests, and athletes have come out in support of his family and the social movement Garner’s death has prompted.

So of course it was about time for some out of touch sports commentator somewhere to decide to make an inappropriate joke.  Apparently Stan Savran, a Pittsburg Penguins studio host for ROOT sports, also believes himself to be funny.  A sample:

“I thought Jay the Penguins would have to put on those ‘I Can’t Breathe’ T-shirts for a while, because Columbus was suffocating.”

As you might have expected no one was laughing.  For his part Savran did apologize on twitter afterwards, but the damage was done.

“I can’t breathe jokes” simply aren’t funny, but this announcer made one anyway
