NFL legend and Hall of Famer has sadly passed away at age 84

He was one of the best.

Legendary Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney has passed away at the age of 84 years old.  Rooney has owned the Steelers since 1988, and has been widely regarded as one of the best owners in the NFL.

Lots of former coaches and players have spoken about Rooney over the years, with the majority of the comments being very positive.

Via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

"Dan has always led with humility,'' said Hall of Famer Joe Greene while presenting Rooney for induction into Canton in 2000. "When things go as planned, Dan is in the background. When things don't go as planned, he's in the forefront."

Said former coach Bill Cowher, "He was like a father, a friend, a mentor, a boss who inspired others around him. He was a people person and he never forgot where he came from. He epitomized Pittsburgh — hard working, humble, no-nonsense, tell it the way it is and never forget where he came from. That's him, that's Pittsburgh."

Rooney made it into the NFL Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2009.
