Saints' Sean Payton is reportedly 'monitoring' another head coaching job

He recently signed an extension with the Saints.

Rumors around Saints head coach Sean Payton leaving New Orleans caused a lot of drama last season before Payton and the Saints eventually agreed to a five-year extension to his contract. Many thought that would be the end of those rumors, but just one year later, they are already back up and running.

According to NFL.com, Payton is "monitoring" the situation regarding the Los Angeles Rams and their open head coaching position.

With the Los Angeles Rams job open, multiple sources say it is a position Payton is monitoring with sincere interest. For Payton to become the team's new head coach, it would take significant maneuvering behind the scenes to work. One source described the prospects as not imminent or likely but "possible." The Rams, of course, would have to decide he's their overwhelming No. 1.

The Rams fired Jeff Fisher two weeks ago, and despite a lack of recent success, the Rams job has become a hot destination with multiple big names mentioned in rumors.

The NFL.com report mentions that even with the recent extension, the Saints may still be willing to part ways with Payton due to increasing frustration in the organization. Whether that means allowing Payton to just take another job or not is yet to be seen.

Heading into Saturday, the Saints were 6-8 on the 2016 season. They are on the verge of missing the Playoffs for the third consecutive year.
