John Cena's future plans could reportedly include a former US champion

This would be interesting.

On July 4, John Cena returns to WWE television and Smackdown Live after months away from wrestling after proposing to longtime girlfriend Nikki Bella at WrestleMania 33.

There have been multiple reports as to what exactly Cena will be doing once he returns, that have included speculation about WWE champion Jinder Mahal, Roman Reigns, and many more. However, the latest report suggests that Cena may be feuding with another returning Smackdown Live competitor: Rusev.

Via Still Real To Us:

"There have been rumors about him feuding with Jinder Mahal at Summerslam. However, he needs an opponent for Battleground first. It was recently reported on Wrestling Observer Radio that WWE officials are looking at The Bulgarian Brute to feud with Cena heading into the Battleground PPV."

Now this would be an interesting way to bring Cena back to WWE television. Rusev needs to somebody to feud with once he finally returns, and he and Cena have a long history with one another, and they've worked well.

Still, if the plan is now to throw Rusev at Cena first, and follow that up with Mahal, the question then becomes why make Cena a free agent prior to his return?
