Broncos defensive lineman Antonio Smith under investigation for child abuse

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson may have something terrible in common with a current Denver Broncos defensive lineman. A child abuse complaint has been filed against Broncos DL Antonio Smith, according to TMZ. Smith has not been arrested and no charges have been filed as of now.

"We're trying to discern the truth from the untruthfulness of the claim to decide what charges, if any, will be filed," Fort Bend County, Texas district attorney John Healy told TMZ.

Smith was signed by Denver after he was released by Oakland. He has also played for Arizona and Houston in his 11-year career.

"Our Sheriff's Office has received some information, they're working with our office to try and find out as much information as we can about the allegation," Healey told Klis. "At this particular point anything in reference to Mr. Smith is just that — an allegation."

Even though it's just an allegation at this point, under the new NFL Personal Conduct Policy, an allegation is enough to begin a NFL investigation into the matter. If he is charged, Smith will likely be placed on the commissioner's exempt list, like Peterson last season. He would remain on the list, with pay, until the case is resolved and if any league discipline is handed down to him.
