Video emerges of moments before Ron Rivera decided to bench Cam Newton

Yikes.

It looks like the Carolina Panthers might have more than just on-field issues after the 40-7 shellacking they took on Sunday night at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks. The game started off noticeably bizarre with league MVP Cam Newton sitting on the bench for the first offensive snap of the game.

He was apparently benched because he violated an incredibly minor dress code rule. Lo and behold, the first play from scrimmage, featuring Derek Anderson, went horribly wrong with an interception that was returned to the 10-yard line and set up an easy Seattle score.

After the game, it was reported that Newton was benched for not wearing a tie and he couldn't find a suit that fit him on short notice so he went with a turtleneck. That was apparently enough for Rivera to confront him about it as he was getting off the bus and that was presumably when he told Newton that he would get benched to start the game.

You can see in the video above that Newton was pretty pissed about it and now the team could be facing more problems than just trying to make the playoffs after reaching the Super Bowl last year.
