Ohio State alum and Big Ten Network analyst Robert Smith thinks there's a new No. 1 in the college football world, and that squad is Michigan.
Smith discussed Michigan's defense and their running game getting going as the reason the Wolverines are the top team in the country.
While Alabama still holds the top spot in the AP top 25, followed by Ohio State, Michigan and Clemson.
The Tide have key wins over USC, Ole Miss, Arkansas and Tennessee. Michigan's lone win against a top-tier team came in a 14-7 win over Wisconsin. Ohio State, on the other hand, has statement wins over Oklahoma and Wisconsin.
It's hard, even at this point, to put Michigan above Alabama, or even Ohio State at this point. We'll see how the rest of the year plays out, but Jim Harbaugh's squad has some work to do.
