Dak Prescott is "the guy" for the Dallas Cowboys and, at this point, that isn't up for debate. The soon-to-be second-year quarterback from Mississippi State was highly successful in his debut campaign at the helm and Prescott's impact was large enough to force the Cowboys to evaluate life without Tony Romo as the team's primary quarterback.
With that in mind, there has been plenty of speculation about Romo's next landing spot. When he goes, though, the Cowboys must search for a new backup to Prescott and they reportedly are beginning to do that.
Josh McCown isn't a sexy name by any stretch of the imagination, but the 37-year-old has proven to be a capable backup. While he would not be an intriguing long-term fit if something happened to Prescott, McCown is the type of clipboard-toting backup that many NFL teams would be happy to bring aboard and he would also take some heat off Prescott should the youngster struggle at all in year two.
It seems clear that the Cowboys will be losing Romo in the (very) near future and someone has to backup Dak Prescott for the foreseeable future. It might not be Josh McCown... but it might be Josh McCown.
