Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has never thought that college athletes should be paid. He still doesn't and in the wake of the cases like Todd Gurley, Jameis Winston, and Johnny Manziel, he holds fast to that ideal. To Swinney, amateurism is the top priority and there's no reason why the players should get paid for games or for their signatures.
"I think you're in the wild, wild West as far as, OK, this guy can go sell his autograph for this, and this alumni's going to pay you this for your autograph. I don't think that's good for college football."
However, that isn't to say that the coach isn't totally against reform in college football.
"What we need to look at in college football is the stipend situation; how we can improve their quality of life in the scholarship. I think the conversation is more within the scholarship as opposed to singling people out."
