Early recruiting rankings show a rising contender as a shocking No. 1

It's been a while since they've recruited this well.

Move aside Alabama, Ohio State, and Florida State; there's a new team at the top of the recruiting rankings for the 2018 class.

And it's not even close.

After landing five-star Ricky Slade last Friday, Penn State has furthered its commanding lead in 247Sports' class rankings for 2018. Penn State now has 11 total commits for the class already, including two five-star recruits.

Following Penn State in the rankings are Miami Florida State, Notre Dame, and USC.

Usually you can't take a lot out of recruiting rankings this early in the cycle, but there is a lot you can take out of Penn State's class already. Two five-stars under wraps is a fantastic start, and it is hard to see them falling out of the Top 10 in the recruiting rankings with the rate they are going at.

Penn State had 11 wins in 2016, and it looks like head coach James Franklin is going to make that a common occurrence in the future.
