The Tennessee Volunteers received a great deal of heat for not filling their athletic director position for some time. When the Vols finally did fill the job, many were irate that the administration went with Kansas State AD John Currie instead of former football coach (and national championship winner) Phillip Fulmer for the job.
With that in mind, it appears safe to count former Tennessee defensive tackle and NFL Pro Bowler Albert Haynesworth among the detractors of the choice.
There have been rumors flying around that Fulmer was not at all pleased by the decision when it came down, especially in the way that it was communicated (or not communicated) to him. Still, this is the most public annihilation of the administration from a former player, and Haynesworth did not hold back in any way as he blasted Tennessee.
Haynesworth also took the shot about Tennessee “unjustly” firing Fulmer from his head coaching position back in 2008 and it doesn’t come as a shock that he might do that given the Vols’ lack of success on the field since that point. It feels accurate to assume that Haynesworth isn’t the only one who feels this way, but Tennessee might take special notice of this ultra-clear message from a high-profile alum.
