Former WWE champion reportedly released just a month from WrestleMania

Didn't see this coming.

According to PWInsider, former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Jack Swagger has requested and received his release from WWE.

Swagger, 34, was a former wrestler at Oklahoma before being signed by WWE in 2006. Swagger debuted on WWE television as a part of their ECW brand in 2008, eventually winning the ECW title. Swagger later went on the World Heavyweight Championship in 2010, and he later had a stint with the U.S. title in 2012.

Swagger had been directionless in the past several years following his "Real Americans" angle with former manager Zeb Colter. According to PWI, this was the impetus behind Swagger requesting his releases from WWE.

Interestingly enough, Colter — a.k.a. Dutch Mantel — is now the head of creative with rival promotion TNA Impact. If swagger hopes to continue wrestling, this could be a potential destination.
