Geno Smith might not even be good enough to be the backup in New York

Geno Smith may not even be good enough as a second stringer.

Geno Smith has already gone from starter to backup, but USA Today reports he may not even be good enough for second string.

Smith struggled in a preseason game last week against Washington, as he completed six of 13 passes for 47 yards and threw an interception. Bryce Petty, a fourth-round pick from last year's draft, threw for 242 yards and two touchdowns in the same game.

Smith's struggles this preseason may have opened the door for Petty to be the No. 2 quarterback behind starter Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Smith entered camp as the backup, and Jets' coach Todd Bowles didn't say if the depth chart has changed.

Smith, a second-round pick, started in 29 games in 2013 and 2014. His struggles, and eventually a punch from a teammate last season, finally pushed the Jets signal-caller to the second string. It would be devastating for him to fall any further behind.

Smith has an 11-18 record as a starter, throwing for 27 touchdowns and 35 interceptions over his career.
