Jimbo Fisher is one of the more successful college coaches in the country.
And while he appears quite happy at Florida State, his name continues to be rumored for the LSU gig. We knew his standing with reported contract negotiations while the Tigers considered canning Les Miles last season, but Ross Dellenger added an interesting tidbit in The Advocate about LSU's last coaching search after Nick Saban left in 2004.
Dellenger added that LSU's first choices were Steve Spurrier or Urban Meyer, but both were accounted for. That bumped Miles and Bobby Petrino to the top of the list. And while Fisher received an interview, he wasn't considered a "serious candidate" because of his age.
If LSU could have overlooked that minor detail, would he have earned the job? He'd spent four years under Nick Saban and probably would have been ready to take over.
"He might have been too young at that time," former athletic director Skip Bertman said. "But not now. My God, he's one of the top coaches in the United States."
Fisher instead remained with LSU until 2006 under Miles, when he eventually bounced to Florida State and became the coach-in-waiting under Bobby Bowden. He went on to win four consecutive bowl games, including a national championship in 2013.
Will three times of LSU peaking its interest in Fisher be the charm? If so, the Tigers will have to be willing to pay up, with Fisher's reports $5.2 million salary and buyout estimation between $3-5 million.
