Next season's Michigan-Florida game could be on the move

The Michigan-Florida game in 2017 is already highly anticipated and changes to the game could be in the works.

The 2016 season will wrap up with the long-awaited rematch between Alabama and Clemson on Jan. 9, but it is never too early to look ahead to the 2017 campaign. With that in mind, the Michigan Wolverines and Florida Gators are set to do battle in the season opener at AT&T Stadium in what will be a highly anticipated non-conference match-up. However, it appears the initial plans for that contest may be changing.

Adam Rittenberg of ESPN brings word:

Sources: There have been preliminary discussions about moving the Michigan-Florida season opener at AT&T Stadium to Sunday, Sept. 3. Both schools still must sign off on the date change. The game is currently set for Saturday, Sept. 2.

Moving the game from Saturday to Sunday would likely accomplish the goal of setting this contest between the Big Ten and the SEC apart, as it would place it in its own time slot. Of course, this is Labor Day weekend so a change like this would not be out of the ordinary, but Michigan has long been a very traditional football power that prefers to play football on Saturday afternoons.

At this point, this is simply one report but, if it comes to fruition, a high-level college football game will be taking place on the first Sunday in September.
