Ohio State was supposed to throttle Bowling Green in the team's 2016 season opener. Urban Meyer's team entered the game as approximately a four-touchdown favorite in Columbus, and with J.T. Barrett at the helm, expectations were high that the Buckeyes could "cover" that lofty number.
Then, the game started and, well, Ohio State surpassed any rational expectation.
The Buckeyes exploded for 77 (!) points in a very lopsided victory over the Falcons and the 67-point margin of victory wasn't the only impressive thing. In fact, Ohio State actually shattered a long-standing record offensively, amassing 776 yards of total offense, with 417 through the air and 359 on the ground.
That total offense mark broke an 86-year-old record in Ohio State lore, as the Buckeyes put up 718 yards against Mount Union back in 1930. In terms of individual statistics, Barrett was the most dominant player on the field, throwing for 349 yards and scoring seven combined touchdowns, and running back Mike Weber exploded in his debut, rushing for 136 yards on only 19 carries.
