One of ESPN's biggest competitors also hit with big layoffs

Making the move for budgetary reasons.

ESPN's major layoffs have been the dominant sports media story of the past several weeks and with good reason. The worldwide leader has long been the No. 1 entity in the industry and, with approximately 100 high-profile individuals losing work over a 24-hour period, it is easy to see why the story exploded to the degree that it did.

However, it is important to note that ESPN isn't the only company facing layoffs, nor has that ever been the case. On Wednesday, a reminder surfaced in that Yahoo also will be laying off multiple employees.

Awful Announcing brings word that two members of Yahoo's hockey blog, Puck Daddy, have been laid off and their personal statements to announce the move are above. From a hockey perspective, this is huge news, as ESPN's layoffs included a massive drop-off in its hockey-related coverage and Yahoo is seemingly following suit.

The report indicates that it is "unclear whether cuts at Yahoo will be confined to the hockey staff or whether they'll affect other sports as well." With that said, high-profile writers losing work is never good for the industry and there could be more coming. More information will likely surface in the near future but, for now, that is what we know.
