One of the greatest teams to win a national title is finally getting its White House visit

It's about time!

The 1982-82 N.C. State Wolfpack is one of the greatest teams to ever grace a basketball court. They were the biggest underdogs to ever win a national title when the Pi Slamma Jamma fraternity known as the University of Houston. They got a 54-52 win thanks to an incredible putback dunk from Lorenzo Charles.

It has become a tradition in the last couple decades for any championship team to visit the White House after winning a title, but the Wolfpack could not afford the trip and so then-coach Jim Valvano was the only one to visit Ronald Reagan while the rest of the team talked to Reagan via satellite.

Next month on May 9, NC State will visit Barack Obama at the White House. Former Wolfpack player Thurl Bailey used a go-between, Utah senator Orrin Hatch, to get in contact with Obama. From there, everything fell into place.

"Every time I've seen a team going to the White House over the years, I always felt like we missed out on something," Ernie Myers, who was a freshman in '83, said in NC State's statement. "To have this opportunity is like ANOTHER dream come true."

Bailey wrote a heart-warming letter that can be found in its entirety right here.
