Pac-12 refs under fire after missing illegal hit that KO'd Stanford player

Owusu was forced to leave the game.

Pac-12 refs might be the most maligned officials of the Power 5 conferences, and plays like this don't help their case.

Stanford receiver Francis Owusu was knocked out on a helmet-to-helmet hit by UCLA's Tahaan Goodman, but the potentially illegal hit drew no penalties from the Pac-12 officials working the game.

Goodman comes in from the side after Owusu makes the catch, and leans in with his helmet to make the hit. It seems to satisfy all interpretations that we have seen of the targeting rule, and you would think that the officials might even be influenced slightly with how Owusu had to leave the game due to injury.

Compare that hit to what got called targeting in Saturday's Michigan and Penn State game, and you can see why a lot of fans absolutely despise this rule. There is no consistency with what is flagged for targeting, and often very incidental hits get called while wildly illegal ones go unscathed.

Come on, kids; tackle with your eyes up. You don't need to use the crown of your helmet to tackle someone.
