Report: South Carolina reaches agreement with next head coach

Who will likely be taking over for Steve Spurrier and Shawn Elliott?

According to Sports Talk SC, the South Carolina Gamecocks have reached a tentative agreement with Houston head coach Tom Herman.

Here's the report:

"We are told today a tentative agreement on an offer in principle between USC and Tom Herman has been reached. The deal is contingent on Herman and his wife liking what they see when they visit USC and Herman and Ray Tanner being comfortable with one another."

This comes after Houston lost its first game of the season on Saturday to UConn, essentially eliminating Houston from Playoff contention. South Carolina has been looking for a new head coach ever since Steve Spurrier abruptly retired over a month ago. Herman has been a lead candidate for many job openings so far, so his name going off the market this early could be a huge blow other teams looking for a new coach.

If Herman is indeed hired, he would be taking over for interim head coach Shawn Elliott. Elliott has coached the Gamecocks to a 1-4 record since taking over for Spurrier.

More information to come as it is made available.
