It looks like Malik Zaire is free and clear to finally choose his transfer destination.
The former Notre Dame quarterback has been holding off his transfer decision, as Zaire had heavy interest in transferring to Florida. However, an SEC rule had been preventing Zaire from going to Florida, as the SEC had blocked Florida from receiving grad transfers since past transfers had failed to complete academic requirements.
However, the SEC changed that rule at their spring meetings on Friday, meaning Zaire should be eligible to transfer to Florida if he so chooses.
As a grad transfer, Zaire should be eligible immediately.
Zaire has also been heavily considering Texas in recent weeks, with previous contenders Wisconsin and Harvard figured to be out of the running.
If Zaire does choose Florida, it is possible he would be the immediate starter for Jim McElwain and the Gators. The move would also allow Florida to develop redshirt freshman quarterback Feleipe Franks, who would be the potential starter without Zaire in place.
Zaire, a former four-star recruit, was showing promise at Notre Dame until an ankle injured sidelined him for the season in 2015. His starting spot was then usurped by Deshone Kizer, who didn't let go of that position. Kizer has since been taken in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns.
