Starter, fifth-year senior opts to transfer from University of Miami

That's less than ideal.

The Miami Hurricanes were already set to break in a new starting quarterback in 2017, with Brad Kaaya leaving for the NFL. Now, though, Mark Richt and his staff will be planning for life without one of Kaaya's primary protectors, as fifth-year senior offensive tackle Sunny Odogwu will be transferring from the program.

The 6'8", 322-pound veteran will be immediately eligible elsewhere as a graduate transfer and Odogwu had this to say about his time at Miami.

"I have enjoyed my four years at the University of Miami. I look forward to continuing my playing career elsewhere, but I will always cherish the relationships I've built with my teammates, coaches and professors here at The U."

In addition, Richt shared this sentiment on the heels of Odogwu's decision to transfer.

"Sunny and I had a good conversation, and he informed me that he feels his best opportunity to get the most playing time would be at another school. Sunny has been a great teammate and leader for this program, and we will miss him."

At this time, Odogwu's next stop is unknown, but this is a significant loss for the Hurricanes. He was a fully entrenched starter at the outset of the 2016 season before dealing with injury issues and, if healthy, Odogwu was expected to anchor the offensive line in 2017.

It will be interesting to see where he lands but, as of Monday, Miami's loss is apparent.
