The world mourns the death of Carrie Fisher, one of Hollywood's brightest stars

She was 60 years old.

Actress, Carrie Fisher, daughter of Hollywood legends Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher, died today in Los Angeles. The legendary actress,  best known for her role as Princess Leia in the "Star Wars" franchise, suffered a massive heart attack aboard a United Airlines flight from London to Los Angeles Friday, December 23.

Fisher was reportedly unresponsive when the plane hit the ground and she was transferred to a local hospital. While she made an initial recovery, her passing was announced Tuesday.

"It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning," a statement from Family spokesman Simon Halls read.

"She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers."

Fisher made her appearance on the screen in 1969 television film starring her mother. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s she was one of the most popular actresses in Hollywood. Alongside her role in "Star Wars," Fisher also appeared in "Shampoo," "When Harry Met Sally," "Soapdish," and many other popular films.

Over the latter portion of her career, Fisher was a well known writer and essayist, who brought to her audience a candid take on life.

Fisher's candid nature was on full display in a 2015 interview in which she schooled a young female reporter about how fickle Hollywood could be.

Fisher was asked whether it took convincing to sign on to the latest installment of the "Star Wars," series. 

"No, I'm a female in Hollywood, over the age of let's say 40 and then we could also say 50...They don't have to ask you if you want to work at that age, you'll see someday," Fisher said in the memorable interview.

Carrie Fisher was 60 years old.
