These are some of the country's most dominant college football programs, and the top SEC team may surprise you

Some of the top 20 college football programs in the country are the usual suspects.

Business Insider recently compiled a list of the 20 most dominant college football programs of the modern era.

The list takes into account the number of BCS bowl appearances, BCS bowl game wins,  NCAA championship wins, alumni in the NFL, and average attendance at home games. Unsurprisingly, six of the top 20 reside in the SEC.

19. University of Tennessee

The Vols have won two national titles, in 1967 and 1998; average attendance at home games is 95,584, and 310 alumni have played in the NFL.

16. Auburn University

The Tigers have won two national championships (1957, 2010); average home game attendance is 85,657; and 241 alumni have played in the NFL.

15. University of Georgia

The Bulldogs won the 1980 national championship; average attendance at home games is 92,746; 281 alumni have played in the NFL.

5. Louisiana State University

The Tigers have won three national titles (1958, 2003, 2007); average home game attendance is 91,418; and 313 former LSU Tigers have played in the NFL.

4. University of Alabama

The Tide have won 11 national championships (1925, 1926, 1930, 1934, 1941, 1961, 1964, 1965, 1073, 1978, 1979, 1992, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015); average attendance at home games is 101,505; and 298 alumni have played in the NFL.

3. University of Florida

The Gators have won three national titles (1996, 2006, 2008); average home game attendance is 87,440; and 278 alumni have played in the NFL.

2. University of Southern California

The Trojans have won seven national championships (1962, 1967, 1972, 1974, 1978, 2003, 2004); average attendance at home games is 73, 126; 471 alumni have played in the NFL.

1. Ohio State University

The Buckeyes have won six national championships (1957, 1961, 1968, 1970, 2002, 2014); average home game attendance is 104,933; 409 alumni have played in the NFL.
