While Roy Nelson’s actions at UFC’s Fight Night event could be viewed as terrible, they weren’t without warrant.
After knocking his opponent out he continued to pummel him while asking the ref to stop the fight. After the ref finally called the fight, a clearly upset Nelson left his corner to kick the ref on his backside. Can you really blame him after he begged for the fight to be called earlier?
UFC president Dana White seems to think so, saying that Nelson needs to be “buried.”
“You can’t apologize for that,” White said on the UFC Unfiltered podcast. “You don’t ever, ever put your f**king hands on a referee … or your feet, for any reason what so f**king ever.”
White expects the Brazilian Athletic Committee to come down hard on Nelson and if they don’t, he doesn’t think it’s a “good look.”
CABMAA (Brazilian MMA commission) has addressed the situation, saying they understand Nelson’s frustration while condemning it.
“We, as the regulation body of MMA in Brazil and member of the Association of Boxing Commissions, will not tolerate such conduct.”
It’s just a matter of time before we learn what penalty Nelson faces.
