Throwback Thursday: The last time Michigan lost as a five-touchdown favorite

The horror is less than a decade old.

The Michigan Wolverines begin the 2016 season on Sept. 3 against the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors and, as you may expect, the entire college football universe is assuming victory for Jim Harbaugh's team. Michigan enters the game as a 40-point favorite (give or take a half-point or two) in the contest, and after the visiting Rainbow Warriors were shellacked in Australia against the California Golden Bears, expectations are even higher for the Wolverines.

Just nine years ago, Michigan entered the 2007 season opener in very similar fashion against Appalachian State and, well, any fan of the program won't need to be prodded in order to remember what transpired. In short, the visiting 1-AA squad pulled off one of the biggest upsets in college football history, entering the game as a 33-point underdog but shocking the world with a lights-out performance.

The video above is a reminder of that ugly day in the Big House for Michigan fans, and the blocked field goal (poor kicker Philip Brabbs) is a memory that is burned into the brain of anyone clad in Maize and Blue. It would be an equally significant shock if the Wolverines fell short in this year's opener, but reflecting on a landmark occasion from less than a decade ago should help the team to remain uber-focused on the task at hand.
