Young Vols receiver deemed academically ineligible ahead of potential breakout year

This is not the greatest news for the Vols.

Rising redshirt freshman receiver Vincent Perry was set to have a breakout year at receiver —- a position the Vols needed improvement at going into 2016 —- but it seems that he has been ruled academically ineligible. Tennessee coach Butch Jones told GoVols247 on Wednesday afternoon of Perry's situation.

Perry will stay at Tennessee as a walk-on until he does what's necessary to get back in the good graces of the coaching staff and academically with the school. Jones called the move a good one and a step toward a potentially positive outcome in the situation.

The Tennessee staff knew about the possibility of this happening, which is why versatile athlete Tyler Byrd made the move to wide receiver. He joins a pretty large group of receivers from the 2016 class and will have the chance to show why he should be one of the starters early in the season.
