FSU's 2022 5-Star Athlete is a Homegrown Stud With Instinctual Ball Skills

Even though the 2022 college football season is still far away, one of the best members of the recruiting class is undoubtedly Sam McCall. While he originally committed to the Florida Gatorshe is taking his talents to another Sunshine State school.

McCall plays for Lake Gibson High School in Lakeland, Fla., which is just a short ride from Gainesville. His versatility at both cornerback and wide receiver has made him the No. 2 overall athlete in his class.

In 2019, he was named to the Ledger All-County First Team after his seven touchdowns helped the Braves reach the second round of Florida state playoffs. During the 2020 season, he totaled 903 receiving yards, 10 touchdowns and nabbed four interceptions as a shutdown corner.

Despite his success on both sides of the ball, he seems likely to become a full-time cornerback in college.

Playing in the NCAA should be easy for McCall, and if he can stay focused and perform well, there is no reason to doubt his chance to be selected in the NFL Draft.

He also had offers from elite programs like the Alabama Crimson Tide, Arkansas Razorbacks, Florida State Seminoles, Georgia Bulldogs, Kentucky Wildcats, LSU Tigers, Miami Hurricanes, Oklahoma Sooners, Penn State Nittany Lions, and South Carolina Gamecocks.

McCall's strong relationship with Florida cornerbacks coach Torrian Gray was said to be a reason that the team was able to snag the future defensive back.

Then, everything changed.

Sam McCall Decommits From Florida

Sam McCall officially backed off his pledge to the Gators on January 1. The five-star recruit originally committed to the Gators over finalists Alabama, Florida State and Oklahoma.

One reason for his decommitment could be that Florida defensive backs coach Torrian Gray left UF for the South Carolina Gamecocks.
