Les Miles is reportedly coaching for his job over the next couple of weeks and if No. 15 LSU does decide to give Miles his walking papers, an interesting name has begun to crop up as a potential replacement.
No. 14 Florida State is pretty happy with their head coach and by all accounts Jimbo Fisher is happy in Tallahassee but according to GridironNow.com, he could be coaxed into returning to Baton Rouge because of Fisher’s history with the Tigers (7-2, 4-2 SEC) and his appreciation of SEC football:
Fisher was LSU’s offensive coordinator from 2000-06, working for Nick Saban the first five seasons and for Miles the other two. Insiders say Fisher is said to be enamored with the SEC’s deep-seated passion for football. While Florida State definitely is a football school, the ACC as a whole is a basketball league. The SEC is a football league. Heck, it’s even a spring football league.
Fisher is well-paid at FSU — he makes more than Miles does at LSU. Fisher is set to earn $5 million this season, and his contract runs through 2022. Miles makes $4.3 million.
Can LSU afford to pay Miles’ buyout and give Fisher a raise? Hey, it’s a power program in the SEC, which means yes. Should it? That’s another question. But the idea that LSU could be considering it is an example of why insiders say Fisher is enamored with the SEC.
The idea LSU would fire Miles after this season seems pretty crazy but luring Fisher back to LSU seems like an absolute pipe dream. But who knows? Maybe Fisher is tired of collecting conference championships and adding hardware to his trophy case every year.
