The Ohio State Buckeyes don't need much in the way of help on the recruiting trail. Yes, Urban Meyer's team will lose a lot of talent (again) to the NFL Draft, but Ohio State has emerged as one of the recruiting powers across the country and that trend continued this week with a pick-up from an unlikely place.
JUCO cornerback Kendall Sheffield is headed to Columbus to play for Meyer and Gerry Hamilton of ESPN brings word from Sheffield on his decision:
"After a great season at Blinn College, and an exciting recruiting process, I have decided to finish my collegiate career at The Ohio State University. I am excited to join Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes, and look forward to helping Buckeye Nation return to the College Football Playoff."
Sheffield's decision reportedly was between Ohio State and Texas A&M, but he chose the Buckeyes in a move that could have lasting implications. The 6-foot, 185-pound cornerback was committed to play for Nick Saban at Alabama before going the JUCO route and Sheffield was rated as a five-star prospect coming out of Missouri City (Tex.).
Ohio State's pick-up of Jeffrey Okudah at the cornerback position certainly made bigger headlines, but Meyer's staff now has the opportunity to work with two upper-tier players at the position in the future. The Buckeyes are already set to lose Gareon Conley and Malik Hooker to early entry in the NFL Draft, with Marshon Lattimore thought to be the next to join the parade to the next level. However, the cupboard remains anything but bare for Ohio State and Sheffield could be a big-time asset in the future.
