ESPN's Football Power Index (FPI) has a new No. 1 after Week 3 of the season, but it might not be who you thought of first.
Clemson has been a hot pick as a new No. 1 so far, with ESPN analysts Kirk Herbstreit and Mark Schlabach ranking the Tigers as No. 1. However, FPI has crowned Oklahoma as the new No. 1, replacing Ohio State who had held the top spot for the first few weeks of the season.
Ohio State had maintained the No. 1 ranking last week despite losing to Oklahoma, but it looks like an additional week of data was enough to jump the Sooners over the Buckeyes. Clemson is now in the No. 3 spot after their win over Louisville, while Alabama has fallen all the way down to fourth.
The biggest jump of the week appears to be from Mississippi State, who catapulted into the Top 10 after destroying LSU 37-7 on Saturday night in Starksville. Mississippi State will get a chance to justify that new ranking very quickly, as they face Georgia in Athens this upcoming week.
