College Spun has released its rankings of the nation’s 12 best college football states — not schools, but states. And, yes, Alabama, you are No. 1. The state boasts two of college football’s premiere powers in the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Auburn Tigers, and their annual in-state rivalry, the Iron Bowl, takes a back seat to only Ohio State vs. Michigan as the sport’s biggest rivalry game.
With the state having no NFL franchise to speak of, or any professional sports teams at all for that matter, college football rules the land. So to, do the team’s head coaches. Alabama’s Nick Saban earns an annual salary of over $7 million a year, while Gus Malzahn takes a home a little less than $4 million per year at Auburn.
The Auburn vs Alabama rivalry has become so heated in recent times and their respective fan bases so huge, you’re either a Crimson Tide fan or Tigers fan. To get an idea of how passionate the fans of both of these schools are, you need to look no further than this video clip of the dramatic ending to the 2013 Iron Bowl.
