Gator Nation got some much-needed good news two weeks ago as the nation’s No. 1 JUCO kicker Eddy Pineiro announced he was signing with the University of Florida to play for the next two years. Pineiro has already signed his letter of intent, and will enroll early to be on campus in January. That will allow him to be fully involved come spring practices, and if all goes as planned he’ll be able to contribute immediately.
Pineiro recently spoke with the Gainesville Sun about his decision to enroll in January, and his quote will surely fire up Florida fans across the country.
“I wanted to enroll early because I wanted to play Spring and I wanted to win out my position,” Pineiro said. “I know they struggled in kicking, but there’s no such thing as a guaranteed starting spot.
“That’s one of the reasons I want to get there as soon as possible – show the coaches what I got and I want to show them I’m the best kicker that’s ever come out of Florida.”
Florida head coach McElwain was able to flip the kicker from Alabama to Florida over a span of about ten days before he announced he wouldl be signing with the Gators. Pineiro’s confidence, and ability, will be very much appreciated in Gainesville — current Florida starting kicker Austin Hardin went 5-for-14 this season on field goals.
