Florida defensive backs coach won't return to team for 2016 season

Jim McElwain hired Kirk Callahan last January as the defensive backs coach.

Florida's defensive backs will be under different direction during 2016, as head coach Jim McElwain has decided to part ways with Kirk Callahan. Callahan was hired as Florida's defensive backs coach last January. He was a graduate assistant at Florida during the 2010-11 seasons, but was hired by his alma mater, the University of Central Florida, where he spent three seasons before returning to Gainesville. Below is an excerpt from Scout.com's report regarding the Callahan news.

"Sources say that McElwain still has a lot of respect for Callahan both as a coach and a person, but he wasn't the right fit for what was going on at Florida right now and has been negatively recruited against in areas that he covers in recruiting."

Florida football officially confirmed the report of the coaching change shortly after it was reported.

"We are making a change on our staff," McElwain said. "Moving forward,Kirk Callahan will be looking at some other opportunities and he has a long career ahead of him."
