What we learned in South Carolina’s close loss to Auburn

Offense: The offense proved it can play with anybody and just did that with Auburn, trading scores all game until the Gamecocks couldn’t convert their last fourth down of the game in the 42-35. South Carolina was only 6-of-14 on third down, but was a nice 5-of-6 on fourth down. Unfortunately, they couldn’t convert on the last one to potentially tie the game. USC rolled up 535 total yards with 402 of them coming from the arm of quarterback Dylan Thompson. That’s a pretty good night for this offense.

Defense: Just atrocious. The unit couldn’t stop anything Auburn did. The Tigers only had eight third downs all game and converted on six of them. They also had 551 total yards for the game, which one of South Carolina’s worst defensive outings under Spurrier.

Special Teams: There wasn’t a whole lot going on for special teams against Auburn as there were only touchdowns to be scored and kicker Elliott Fry made all of extra points.
